TRESemme Fresh Start Dry Shampoo, about $5 at drugstores
I previously reviewed the Waterless Foaming Shampoo from the new Fresh Start range, and I like this product just a bit less. The foam of the other one makes a great refresher for the ends of the hair, and I adore it for my kindergartner daughter to keep her hair fresh and clean without having to dry her hair out badly. She doesn't have an oily scalp obviously, and as long as there isn't food in her hair, I try not to wash it more than 2-3 times a week. So the foam comes in handy and drastically improves the feel, texture, and scent of her hair.
I mentioned that the other product I would not recommend for people seeking a dry shampoo product for an overly oily scalp, but would be a little bit more apt to recommend this product. The Fresh Start Dry Shampoo is reminiscent of the Oscar Blandi and Ojon versions; a sprayable powder in a can, but it costs a fraction of the pricetag of those products. For about $5 you get 5.7oz of product. Before finding this product I'd settled on Batiste from Sally Beauty as the best product for my money, and in that can you get around 5oz for about $8. The price difference isn't that much, so for me it all comes down to how the product inside the can works.
With the Baptiste, you spray it on your roots, massage it in and then brush it out. The end result is that while it mattifies the hair a bit, it does soak up oil and keep it at bay for hours. I get the best results when I spray it on at night before bed and work it in without brushing it out, and in the morning I have a bit of nice volume at the roots and no oilies.
For this product, the instructions are much the same; you spray it onto the roots from a few inches away and then let it sit on the hair for a couple minutes and then brush it out. The results are not quite as good with this product; it seems like there's more liquid in the base and it wets hair a bit. It feels a little tougher and tackier to brush through than when using Baptiste, plus the oil absorbency isn't as good. My hair ends up looking better than it did before, but only marginally.
I will continue to buy Baptiste, but this is a good backup to have for a bit of a touch up after a few hours before my hair gets really gnarly. Right now it can be tricky to find since it's so new. I found mine at Ulta. This just proves to me that I wasn't being melodramatic when I said Baptiste changed my life, no joke. My hair has become so much healthier overall since I've realized I don't have to wash my hair every single day just to avoid gross oily roots.
I definitely recommend this product to anyone who has mildly oily roots and wants to wash their hair a bit less frequently to avoid damaging the ends. I think it will work fine for people with straight OR curly hair.
Have you tried this product? What do you think of dry shampoos in general? What's your favorite dry shampoo product?
