I recently decided that even though I had Nails Inc Baker St, and originally thought I could pass on Essie Butler Please, that I in fact did  need it. So, now I have it. Fact. I decided to play around with a little art. Lately I haven't had much of a chance to do much of the art I'm used to so I feel like my skills and creativity are slipping. Mainly this is because 99% of the nails I do at work are Shellac, and also I wear Shellac for work most of the time. I've told you guys this before, but it's really come home to me recently that I'm out of practice with polish. So I did this bit, probably subconciously as a form of self-flagellation, but also to simply see how it turned out. Long story short, I like it pretty well, I guess. Mostly the colors are great together, but on this particular hand I'm showing you I really like the index, middle and ring fingers the most. The other hand is just the same designs in a different order, but it's not even close to perfect, I never paint art with my left hand much anymore so I feel sort of awkward still, lol.

Colors used:

  • Essie Butler Please
  • China Glaze Aquadelic
  • China Glaze Electric Beat
  • OPI Skull & Glossbones
  • China Glaze Liquid Leather

This design was from last month before the move that destroyed my nails. Grrrrrr. I think that I'm going to try to get them back to this shape and length, but due to a few splits, it may take me a while. Oh well, it was nice while it lasted! Anyhow, this design was based on an editorial nail I saw in Nail Pro Magazine, and it was by CND. I added and embellished a little more and changed the colors, but the design reminded me of a rising sun, so I went with it.

Products used:

  • OPI My Boyfriend Scales Walls
  • OPI In My Back Pocket
  • China Glaze Icicle
  • China Glaze Aquadelic
  • Wet n Wild Black Creme

I was in the mood for rainbow nails, but rainbows with some oomph. I sat down with four bright polishes and this just sort of happened. There's no real inspiration or idea behind it, I just started painting. The best things (and the most obnoxious, apparently) seem to happen when you start without a plan. I wouldn't suggest it in other parts of your life, like choosing a career for instance, but with paint, it's no big deal. Art is cool. Yeah.

Products used:

  • China Glaze White on White
  • China Glaze Purple Panic
  • Color Club Explosive
  • OPI Did It On Em
  • Finger Paints Blue Raspberry Taffy
  • Wnw Black Creme
  • Seche Retain (as base coat)
  • Seche Vite topcoat

Electro Pop Floral Nail Art

China Glaze's new Electro Pop collection is really inspiring. The colors are bright, beautiful and just beg to be used together. I paired up four of them, along with another China Glaze favorite to make this abstract springy floral design.

Electric Beat, a dusky periwinkle, was used as the base, then I used Sweet Hook and Dance Baby to make the flowers. With Gaga for Green and Electric Pineapple from the Island Escape collection for the leaves. Then I used a black striping polish to do really unstructured outlines to just suggest the form of the flowers and leaves. Without the black it literally just looks like blobs of color, and the black just made it pop.

It's snowing here right now. Yeah. I love snow, in theory, especially on a weekend, but for some reason I'm not jumping for joy as per usual. Maybe it's just that I'm busy, or maybe that the sparkling and magical juvenile glee at the prospect of a snow day is somewhat less appealing when one is the parent and no longer the child. But if I'm being completely frank, I'll tell you I think it's because I broke a damn nail. Yes, just one. But you know that deep down all of you can identify with my horror, my dejected and grudging acceptance of a broken nail; a lost friend. I momentarily considered applying a tip, overlaying it with a thin, harmless little layer of acrylic, but after getting out my powders and liquids, and brushes and all the other trappings of my nemesis, I chickened out and packed up and hid all the acrylic accoutrement back in the far reaches of my closet so I wouldn't be tempted. Instead, I embraced the break this time. My index finger nail had popped off at the free edge, leaving me little choice but to yell "TIMBER!" and take the rest of the girls down. It was actually liberating, and as pudgy and stumpy as my fingers look now, I am enjoying that liberation.

I can type, text and apply eyeshadow primer without a care right now. YAY! I can also apply layers and layers of gaudy, and obnoxious color combinations and designs with reckless abandon, because let's face it, nubbins always look so adorable with an intricate design. So here is a random abstract floral number using shades like China Glaze Electric Beat, Flip Flop Fantasy, Gaga for Green, and Dance Baby and OPI Did It On 'Em all on a base of white.
